Starting TRT with Numan: Your Guide

There are three ways to start Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) with Numan. The right one depends on whether you've been tested before or are already on treatment.

Who can start TRT with Numan?

Anyone with symptoms of low testosterone can take a venous blood test with us. TRT treatment itself is available to people who were assigned male at birth.

Common signs of low testosterone include:

  • Sex and fertility: lower sex drive, erection problems, fewer morning erections, lower sperm count

  • Body: tiredness even after a full night's sleep, losing muscle, gaining fat, less facial or body hair, hot flushes, night sweats, joint or back pain

  • Mood and mind: irritability, low mood, anxiety, brain fog, poor concentration

To start TRT, you'll need two blood tests that both show low testosterone. How you get those two tests depends on your route below.

Which route is right for you?

Pick the route that matches you. If your previous blood test is more than 6 months old, start at Route 1.

Route 1: You're new to testing

For you if you haven't had a testosterone blood test, or your last one was more than 6 months ago. It takes 2 blood tests and 2 GP consultations.

  1. Order your first venous blood test. Buy it on our website and choose a nurse visit at home or an appointment at a private clinic, at a time that suits you. Results usually take 3 to 5 days.

  2. Have a free GP consultation. If your result shows low testosterone (15 nmol/L or lower), a free consultation with one of our testosterone specialist GPs is added to your account. You'll talk through your symptoms. Your GP may suggest continuing towards TRT or trying lifestyle changes first. You can reschedule any time from the Test Results page of your account on our website.

  3. Take a second blood test to confirm. If you and your GP agree to continue, we'll email you to book a confirmation venous blood test. It must be at least 2 weeks after your first one.

  4. Have your follow-up consultation. If your second test also shows low testosterone, we'll email you a link to book. Your GP will talk you through treatment options, prices and any questions.

  5. Confirm your prescription. Once you've agreed a plan, your GP writes your prescription. Confirm it from the email we send you.

Route 2: You've already had a blood test

For you if you've had a testosterone blood test elsewhere, such as with the NHS or another private provider, in the last 6 months and it showed low testosterone. If your test is older than 6 months, follow Route 1 instead.

  1. Send us your results. Send a PDF of your results with your name clearly shown, so we can match them to your account. If you don't have one, ask your GP or previous provider for a named copy and send us a clear photo of it.

  2. We review them. Our clinical team checks your results and lets you know your next steps.

  3. Take a venous blood test with Numan. Every lab measures and reports results slightly differently, so a test with us gives us a reliable starting point. It also includes the GP consultation you need to start treatment.

  4. Have your GP consultation. If our test confirms low testosterone, your GP will talk you through treatment options, prices and any questions.

  5. Confirm your prescription. Once you've agreed a plan, confirm your prescription from the email we send you.

Good to know: your two tests must be at least 2 weeks apart and both taken within the last 6 months. A finger-prick test can count as your first test, but your test with Numan must be a venous blood test.

Route 3: You're already on TRT elsewhere

For you if you're currently on TRT with another provider and want to move your care to Numan.

  1. Get a Transfer of Care letter. Ask your current doctor or clinic for a letter that confirms your testosterone deficiency diagnosis and sets out your current treatment plan.

  2. Find your blood tests from before treatment. Send us results from 2 blood tests taken before you started TRT, both showing low testosterone (total testosterone below 15 nmol/L, or free testosterone below 0.225 nmol/L). Ideally, they should be at least 2 weeks apart.

  3. We review your documents. Our clinical team checks your letter and results and confirms your next steps.

  4. Book a venous blood test with Numan. This gives you access to your GP consultation.

  5. Have your GP consultation. Your GP will talk you through moving your treatment over, our prices and options, and any questions.

  6. Confirm your prescription. Once you've agreed a plan, confirm your prescription from the email we send you.

Your venous blood test

Our venous blood test checks 43 biomarkers, including total and free testosterone, plus a blood pressure reading. It's taken from a vein in your arm, either by a nurse at home or at a private clinic.

To get accurate results:

  • Book a morning slot, ideally between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM, when testosterone is naturally highest.

  • Drink plenty of plain water the night before and that morning. It makes your veins easier to find.

  • Pause testosterone boosters (such as Ashwagandha, Tongkat Ali or D-Aspartic Acid) for at least 2 to 3 days before.

  • Stop high-dose biotin (vitamin B7) at least 48 to 72 hours before. It can affect hormone and thyroid results.

If you're already on TRT, the timing of your medication matters too. See our guide to preparing for your venous blood test for the timing that applies to your treatment.

FAQ

What if my first result isn't low?
You won't be offered the free consultation, as TRT needs two results that both show low testosterone.

Can I use a finger-prick test?
A finger-prick test can count as one of your two tests, but at least one must be a venous blood test. Two finger-prick tests can't be used.

I already have two low results. Do I still need to test with Numan?
Yes. At least one test must be with Numan. It gives us a reliable starting point and includes the GP consultation you need to start treatment.

How do I move my consultation?
For your first consultation, go to the Test Results page of your account on our website. For your follow-up consultation, contact our Customer Care team.

Who can I talk to if I'm unsure which route is right for me?
Our Customer Care team is happy to help you work it out.
