Clomifene Citrate
Updated over a week ago

What is Clomifene?

Clomifene citrate is a medication traditionally used as a fertility drug in women, but it is increasingly being prescribed off-label to stimulate the body’s own production of testosterone in men with low testosterone levels. Off-label use refers to the prescribing of a drug for a condition or in a manner not specifically approved by regulatory agencies. You can find more information about off-label medications here.

How do I use clomifene?

It is crucial to take clomifene exactly as your healthcare provider instructs. Clomifene is taken orally every day, with or without food. Consistency in how you take your medication is key to its effectiveness, so make sure to follow your dosing schedule closely.

What side effects can be caused by clomifene?

While clomifene is generally well-tolerated, be aware of serious side effects such as the risk of blood clots. Symptoms of blood clots may include sudden leg pain or swelling, unexplained shortness of breath, chest pain, or a rapid heartbeat. If you notice any of these symptoms, stop taking clomifene immediately and seek urgent medical attention. Report any concerning symptoms to your clinician to ensure your safety during treatment.

What follow-up is needed to continue taking treatment safely?

Regular monitoring is essential for maintaining the safety and effectiveness of your treatment. It’s crucial to attend all follow-up blood tests at 1, 4, 7, and 12 months to track your biomarkers and ensure your levels remain within a safe range. These tests are included in the programme cost and can be easily booked online. Additionally, you should complete the symptom (AMS) questionnaire at these same intervals to help us monitor your progress.

It’s important to remember that treatment may take between 3 and 6 months to show its full effects. During this period, your doctor may monitor your testosterone levels and adjust the dosage as necessary.
