When should I take my blood test?

Updated over a month ago

The timing of your blood test is important to ensure the most accurate results. Please follow the guidance below based on whether you are male or female.

For men

  • Fasting: Please fast (avoid food) for at least 8 hours before collecting your blood sample.

  • Best time of day: Collect your sample first thing in the morning before breakfast (around 7–10 am).

    • This is important because testosterone levels naturally peak in the morning. Testing at this time gives the most accurate reading.

  • Posting your sample: Take your test Monday to Thursday and post it the same day. Do not take your sample on weekends or bank holidays, as this may delay it reaching the lab.

For women

  • Time of day: You may take your sample at any time in the morning. The exact time of day is less important for women than for men.

  • Menstrual cycle timing:

    • Regular periods: Take your test on day 2–5 of your cycle, ideally day 3 (day 1 is the first day of bleeding).

    • Irregular periods: Aim for close to day 3 of your cycle.

    • No periods: You can take your test on any day.

  • Posting your sample: Take your test Monday to Thursday and post it the same day. Do not take your sample on weekends or bank holidays.

Following these steps will ensure your sample reaches the lab in good condition and provides the clearest picture of your hormone levels.
