How do I fix a jammed Wegovy pen?

This guide is designed to help you feel comfortable and confident using your Wegovy FlexTouch pen. It explains how the pen works, what to look for after each dose, and what to do if the pen feels stuck.

How the Wegovy Pen Works

The Wegovy pen is a pre-filled device that delivers your medication in four fixed doses. You use the pen once a week for four weeks.

The injection is given under the skin (subcutaneously). You can inject into your stomach, thigh, or upper arm.

Each pen comes with:

  • 4 NovoFine® Plus needles (one for each dose)

  • A sharps bin for safe disposal

What the Pen Should Look Like After Each Dose

After you press and hold the dose button, the dose counter should return to "0". You will also see the plunger move down the clear window - this is how you know the medication is being delivered.

Once you have used all four doses, the pen will not allow you to turn the dial again. Even if there is a tiny drop of liquid left in the glass window, the pen is empty and should be disposed of.

How to Use Your Pen?

Please watch this video for a step-by-step guide on how to use your Wegovy pen:

Why can’t I twist my dose knob?

If the dial is difficult to turn, it is usually for one of these reasons:

  • The pen is empty: Wegovy pens are designed to lock after the 4th dose. Even if you see a small amount of liquid in the glass window, the pen is finished. This extra liquid is simply a "buffer" to ensure there was enough to prime the pen initially.

  • Insufficient medication: If you have performed more "flow checks" (priming) than necessary, or if the pen leaked because a needle was left attached during storage, you may run out of liquid before the 4th dose.

  • The button is already pressed: Check that the dose button at the end hasn't been accidentally pushed in.

  • The mechanism is stuck: Try gently wiggling the dial back and forth; sometimes the internal plastic gears just need a small nudge to release.

Why can’t I push my dose button in?

If you press the button, and it won't budge, or if you feel a "springy" resistance, the medication is blocked. This happens if:

  • Needle Caps are still on: You must remove both the big outer cap and the small inner needle cover.

  • Blocked Needle: If you reused a needle or stored the pen without a cap, the medication can dry and "clog" the needle.

  • Improper Attachment: The needle may be crooked and hasn't pierced the rubber stopper (septum) properly.

How to fix a pen that won’t press in?

If the dose button feels hard to press, do not use force. Forcing the button can break the internal spring or damage the pen seal.

  1. Stop immediately: Pull the needle away from your skin.

  2. Remove the needle: Unscrew the current needle and throw it in the sharps bin.

  3. Check the pen top: Look at the rubber seal at the top of the pen to ensure it isn't torn.

  4. Attach a new needle: Screw on a fresh needle straight and firmly.

  5. Remove both caps: Take off the clear outer cap and the green/inner needle cover.

  6. Check the flow (prime): Turn the dial to the "flow check" symbol (usually a small dash or droplet icon) and press the button. A drop should appear at the needle tip.

  7. Administer: Dial your dose back to the full dose mark and try again.

Why a Pen Can Become Damaged

The Wegovy pen uses a spring-loaded mechanism. If you push the button while the needle is blocked, the pressure can cause the pen to "fail" internally.

Check the rubber seal (septum): the grey rubber seal at the top of the pen can become damaged if you try to force an injection through a blocked needle.

Look for these signs:

  • Bulging: The grey seal looks swollen or pushed outward.

  • Leaking: Liquid is coming out from the sides of the rubber seal rather than through the needle.

Stop: If the seal is damaged or the pen is leaking from the top, do not use the pen. It will not deliver the correct dose and needs to be replaced.

Remember: If the button feels "stiff" or "jammed," it is a signal to change the needle, not to push harder!
